Assignments

Independent  Novel Study Unit

The Thematic ties for this unit are the themes explored in our study of Lord of the Flies and "Macbeth"
specifically:

The Darkness within humanity, trust and betrayal, Courage and cowardice, democracy, anarchy and tyranny.



****Compulsory Work for Each Student**********
I. Record on paper template or email me with attachment:

A.     Quartering the text. Purpose: like summary sheets, these offer a synopsis of 4 sections of the text and compressed analysis of ideas therein. Use the structure as a guide- you may email these to me with your block & assignment # or you may sign up for a conference slot with me to determine your grade Each summary is worth:       *************                                                                                                                                                                                        /3 x 4 =            /12
II. Record on blog, after you accept invite:

Task B. One  polished character sketch, the size of your hand, with 3 quotes- from your novel posted on blog- please use proper expository format, no I or you voice:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         /12
Task C.  One  polished paragraph, the size of your hand, with 3 quotes- from your novel posted on blog- please use proper expository format, no I or you voice:        the affect of  setting on character

Task D. Post to blog, one polished response writing where you will tie your novel to one of the texts we previously studied (you may  research using outside sources) (Remember to cite properly); this response should be about 2-3 fingers long!!!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                /6

  1. Verbal- visual demonstrating “4 part bridging” (see samples) representing each quarter- peer, self and/or teacher evaluated:                                                                                                                                                                                            
  2. Power point or clip or video (Movie Maker?) any aspect of text                

  1. *View film & analyze or listen to & analyze 3 or songs that deal with theme of this unit; post on your blog                                                                                             

  1. Read a third book and create a graphic organizer comparing and contrasting ideas from each text                                                                                                          

  1. Write a song or poem that reflects something about topic and offer an explication of how your creative piece depicts critical ideas in original piece (artistic process?)                                                                                                 

  1. Podcast- provide link on blog- verbal essay, fictional award to author                                                              

  1. Options…. See me for either another idea- please clear before starting!
  •     Keep ALL rough work-notebook, journal etc! You may need rough work and ideas later to create a ‘note bank’, valuable for essay, or your lit circle discussions, which constitute the final project for this unit! We will be creating files in the classroom, or you may create a transport file accessible online, IF you want to take work away. I need a paper trail in case of a cyber crisis!!! 
  •   We will have a separate handout with rules for blogs & for my  blog site where peers will post work, ideas and feedback to your posts! This is interactive and should be an amazing idea forum. 
  •    *You may choose one task out of /24 above instead of all or do one more for bonus! (Choose from starred item above); any other ideas? Ask!  
Task F. 

 Two personal responses to peers' post- preferably after creative projects are complete (these are due Friday May 11th) Task F is due Tuesday May15 by the end of the day! :-)  These must be professional and academic but should use first person!2-3 fingers wide!                                                                             /6 marks

Blog Guidelines:

  1. Be respectful and academic with ALL posts, including responses to peers' posts
  2. I will invite you to blog on email (you will type in email into invite box for me in lab)
  3. Click on new post and at the bottom box; type your last name, and first initial in "Labels box"
  4. Click "publish"
  5. Each time you post a new assignment, begin typing your last name and the labels box will auto-fill
  6. Be sure to edit each post to "publishable" before your post; each assignment will lose marks for typos, spelling and grammatical errors
